Carol Fountain Nix is an artist, educator, and internationally recognized calligrapher whose work explores the intersection of language, abstraction, and the natural world. Working across painting, mixed media, and contemporary calligraphy, she transforms written language into visual poetry—layering expressive marks, gesture, texture, and line to evoke memory, place, and the enduring rhythms of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Deeply rooted in the landscapes of Western North Carolina, Nix creates abstract works inspired by nature, where calligraphic forms become expressive elements rather than literal text. Her work explores themes of resilience, impermanence, belonging, and transformation, drawing upon the quiet beauty of mountain forests, rivers, changing light, and the passage of time. Guided by a refined visual sensibility, her aesthetic reflects the influence of Japanese and Scandinavian design—clean, intentional, and deeply connected to the natural world.
Before dedicating herself fully to the visual arts, Nix founded and led NIXdesign Inc., an award-winning branding and design firm, for more than twenty-five years. Her extensive background in design continues to inform her work through thoughtful composition, balance, and an appreciation for simplicity and craftsmanship.
Committed to mastering the art of lettering, Nix studied extensively with internationally acclaimed calligraphers including John Stevens, Yves Leterme, Julian Waters, and other distinguished masters. While grounded in traditional calligraphic practice, her work pushes beyond convention, integrating expressive mark-making with painting and mixed media to create contemporary works that blur the boundaries between writing and visual art.
Her artwork has been exhibited at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design, Sawtooth School for Visual Art, Visual Art Exchange, and NC State University Libraries, among other venues. She has taught calligraphy internationally and has presented workshops and programs for organizations including Adobe and Facebook, inspiring artists, designers, and creative professionals to see lettering as both communication and artistic expression.
Today, Nix lives and works in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, where her studio serves as both a creative sanctuary and a place of learning. She maintains an active studio practice while teaching workshops throughout the United States and internationally, mentoring emerging artists, and developing new bodies of work inspired by the landscape surrounding her. Her practice continues to explore the expressive possibilities of calligraphy, abstraction, and mixed media, inviting viewers to experience words not simply as language, but as image, movement, and emotion.
In addition to her studio practice, Nix serves as President of the Carolina Lettering Arts Society, where she is dedicated to advancing the art of calligraphy through education, community, and artistic excellence. Whether creating large-scale installations, intimate mixed-media works, or immersive learning experiences, she remains passionate about preserving the timeless beauty of the handmade mark while expanding the possibilities of contemporary lettering as fine art.
