WORDS = POWER

Carol.River.heic

“All thought is predicated upon the breadth of language.”
Kimberly Arana

As calligraphers, we understand that words are not merely marks on a page—they are vessels of meaning, memory, and intent. Each stroke carries responsibility. Each letter has weight. Working with words is both a craft and a calling because language inherently holds power and association.

In my role as director of the NC State University Crafts Center, I work with students from all disciplines and backgrounds. Mental health is a priority for our campus and for my organization, and it is important to create a space where students can explore new art forms and express themselves freely and unapologetically. In a time when many feel unheard, misunderstood, or pressured into silence, creativity becomes a solace.

As a result, I created a campus-wide initiative called WORDS = POWER, engaging student artists, writers, poets, and makers across disciplines to confront their experiences through written and visual expression. Through a series of WORDS = POWER sessions—led by a certified arts counselor—students explored language as both medium and message, channeling personal truths into impactful creative work.

The one stipulation for W = P submissions was simple: the work had to incorporate words. For some students, that proved challenging. Words carry weight. They stake a claim on the surface. They reveal intention. To place language visibly and permanently into a work of art is to stand behind it—to declare something aloud.

A Storm, a River, and
a Beginning

My personal connection to the Words = Power project took a profound turn in September 2024, when Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina—my home—bringing unprecedented flooding to the region. It was the worst storm in the region’s history. And it was the start of an artistic journey that changed me forever.
